Dementia and Sleep

Things that may be experienced
  • Insomnia (unable to get sleep)

  • Sleeping patterns and times can change

  • Sleeping more than usual

  • Sleep disturbances in general.

Sleep can be impacted and is a common concern in those with dementia. We’ll not go into the causes here, however you can delve further into the subject in our resources section.


Maintaining good sleep

Some strategies that can help improve sleep

  1. Try maintaining a regular sleep schedule as much as possible (going to and getting out of bed)

  2. Avoiding large meals before bedtime

  3. Reducing naps through the day

  4. Avoiding caffeine or alcohol later in the day

  5. Making sure the sleeping environment is conducive of sleep: Darkness, low noise and cool temperature
